B Boys In Occupied Mexico: The Lyrical Density of a Solo Project from Los Angeles

Released in 2001 on the MeanStreet label, B Boys In Occupied Mexico sees 2Mex use hip-hop as a vehicle for personal and political expression. As a founding member of the group Visionaries and co-founder of the duo Of Mexican Descent with Xololanxinxo, he delivers an album that stands out for its dense wordplay and distinctive vocal style. The record features 17 tracks, several of which include guest appearances from LMNO, Xololanxinxo, Fermin, BUSDRIVER, Sick Jacken, Lord Zen, and Angie Gonzalez.

A Fragmented Yet Coherent Production

The sonic construction of the album relies on a diversity of interventions that avoid uniformity while maintaining stylistic unity. 2Mex co-produced the record as a whole, while external producers brought their specific signatures: Paris Zax handled the production for the track Making Money Off God, The Drug Lab worked on Doctors, Drums and Danger as well as The Truth, and Andre Afram Asmar was responsible for both mixing and production on The Believe in Yourself Song. This division of labor demonstrates a collaborative approach without diluting the central artistic identity.

The Tracks That Structure the Argument

Several tracks illustrate the technical and thematic density of the project. "Ghost Writer" opens the album with an intro that immediately establishes the codes of the lyrical approach. "Humble Is the Style of the Day," credited to LMNO and Xololanxinxo, offers a balance between personal flow and collective presence. "Making Money Off God" stands out for its production by Paris Zax, which gives the track a particular sonic texture. Other tracks like "Across & Down," "Offering," or "The Truth" contribute to the album's overall architecture without letting the tracklist be dominated by just a few pieces.

The constellation of collaborative voices

Collaborations constitute a structural element of the album, with Xololanxinxo appearing on five tracks: "Humble Is the Style of the Day," "Control Mexica," "Doctors, Drums and Danger," "Wonderful Memories," and "Lord 25." His regular presence strengthens the bond between the two artists within the duo Of Mexican Descent. LMNO also appears on "Humble Is the Style of the Day," adding a complementary voice to that of 2Mex. Fermin features on "Control Mexica," BUSDRIVER on "Making Money Off God," Sick Jacken and Xololanxinxo on "Doctors, Drums and Danger," Lord Zen shares a track with Xololanxinxo on "Lord 25," and Angie Gonzalez is credited on "The Believe in Yourself Song." Each intervention fits into a logic of vocal complementarity rather than isolated appearances.

Verdict: a record where lyrical density compensates for production uncertainties

B Boys In Occupied Mexico positions itself as a work where dense writing and distinctive vocal style form the main pillars. The diversity of producers, the distribution of featuring tracks, and the structure across 17 songs offer internal richness without compromising overall coherence. The album remains a testament to the early-2000s underground scene in Los Angeles, where the artist uses hip-hop to express personal and political emotions while maintaining a recognizable sonic identity.
