Bakar - Badkid

Editorial note7,0/ 10
By Le Stagiaire·

Badkid: the construction of a solitary universe where Bakar's writing blurs the lines between narrative rap and pop introspection. Released on May 22, 2018, the album does not present itself as a simple compilation but rather as a sonic novel, dense in its concision: eleven tracks in twenty-nine minutes and thirty-eight seconds suffice to sketch a portrait of a determined young Londoner who aims to prove that the genre is an issue of listening rather than creation.

But at what cost?

From the very first second, the artist establishes a tension between the rigor of a soloist working in an echo chamber and the melodic ambition of an artist who refuses established codes. The production, although its architects are not identified for every track, oscillates between indietronica, alternative R&B, and hip-hop, deliberately blurring boundaries. It is this hybridity that gives the album its primary strength: Bakar needs no credited features to give substance to his lyrics; he constructs the sonic texture himself with an economy of means that becomes an aesthetic choice in itself.

Rahma: the pivotal track where personal wounds become raw material for salvific writing

At the heart of the album, BADlands functions as a cornerstone. It is here that Bakar's songwriting reaches its narrative maturity: every verse is a crack in the facade, every chorus an attempt at reconstruction. The track isn't just a street name or geographical location; it's a metaphor that runs through the entire project. It's this same voice you'll find again in the rest of his career, but Badkid offers a more stripped-down version, without commercial filters or excessive arrangements. The cover art, created by Dexter Navy, further reinforces this visual identity that accompanies the message: a closed, intimate universe where every element was designed to serve the general atmosphere of the album.

"Big Dreams": the confrontation between solo rigor and the melodic ambition of an independent project

The closing track arrives with "Big Dreams," a song that functions as a head-on confrontation between the solitude of solitary writing and the desire for a broader reach. It is here that one measures everything Badkid has managed to build in record time: transforming a simple mixtape into a full-length album without compromising his own identity. Bakar does not seek to borrow from others; he prefers that the voice remain purely his, that every note come solely from him. This artistic independence is also a political act: refusing the dominant collaborative model in modern rap industry to reaffirm that introspection does not require an external chorus. Mixtape or studio album?
