Black Eyed Peas - TRANSLATION

Editorial note0,5/ 10
By Le Stagiaire·

Released on June 18, 2020, on the Epic label, TRANSLATION presents itself as a sonic architecture where production serves as neutral backing to expose contrasts between Latin American and Anglophone vocals. Fifty-six minutes and twenty-six seconds of rhythmic sequences, fifteen tracks with twelve crediting features. The album interlaces between MASTERS OF THE SUN VOL.

RITMO (Bad Boys For Life): the opening that sets the Latin tempo.

The first track, RITMO (Bad Boys For Life), immediately places J Balvin at the center of the setup. His presence on this opening track is not a simple vocal addition; it imposes a Latin tempo that will dictate the production for the entire album. The feature does no more than add to the sonic texture: it becomes the rhythmic engine, transforming from the first seconds an electronic structure into a playground for percussion and melodies borrowed from reggaeton codes.

MAMACITA: the rhythmic superposition of Ozuna / J. Rey Soul on the Epic foundation

Ozuna and J. Rey Soul do not follow one another; they occupy together a vocal space that doubles the track's density. This configuration creates tension between voices: Ozuna's, deeper and laid back on the beat, opposes J. Rey Soul's, higher and faster, without either covering the other. The result is a harmonious stacking that functions as a musical conversation rather than a simple succession of solos.

GIRL LIKE ME: vocal tension as Shakira clashes with electronic production

Girl Like Me, the fourth track on the album, introduces another form of friction. Its presence is not incidental: it transforms the song into a meeting point between two distinct vocal registers. Where other features favor rhythmic alignment, here it is the difference in tessitura and timbre that dominates. The track functions as an injunction toward sonic diversity: it is not about unifying voices, but making them coexist without fully blending.

VIDA LOCA: Maximum density with Nicky Jam, Tyga and J. Rey Soul

Track 5 hits a peak of collaborative saturation. VIDA LOCA brings together three guests on the same track: Nicky Jam, Tyga, and J. Rey Soul. This triple lineup is one of the densest on the album. It's here that the notion of laboratory comes to life: each featuring is treated as an experimental variable that alters the overall sound without compromising its balance.

NEWS TODAY: Back to Minimalist Production

The final track, NEWS TODAY, closes the album on a more subdued register. After twelve tracks featuring guests, this last piece serves as a moment of respiration. It carries no credited guest and allows the group's sound to return to its raw form. This conclusion contrasts with the saturation of previous features, offering an ending that seems to close the cycle opened by RITMO.

Verdict: a conceptual album where every feature is a variable

TRANSLATION does not seek to impose a hierarchy among its guests nor to construct a linear narrative. Each track functions as an isolated experience, where Epic production serves as the neutral foundation for testing different vocal combinations. From J Balvin on RITMO to Nicky Jam and Tyga on VIDA LOCA, each feature is treated with the same rigor: it is neither a decorative addition nor a dilution of the main proposition. The album defines itself by its ability to let voices coexist without homogenizing them, transforming the whole into a catalog of rhythmic fusions where every collaboration brings something specific to the overall sound.
