Boyz II Men - II

Editorial note9,5/ 10
By Le Stagiaire·

On August 30, 1994, Boyz II Men released their second studio album, II, under the Motown Records label. This opus marked a turning point in the group's career, which had just experienced explosive success with their first album, Cooleyhighharmony. Today, II is considered one of the most influential R&B albums of the 1990s. In 1995, it won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Album, becoming the first recipient in this category. More than twenty years after its release, II was ranked 495th on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time in 2020.

A varied and rich production

The album II benefited from the collaboration of a pantheon of recognized producers, each contributing a distinct touch to the work. Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, R&B legends, produced the tracks All Around the World and On Bended Knee, two songs that would become classics. Their production, rich in orchestral arrangements and melodic beats, allowed Boyz II Men to express themselves with rare intensity. Babyface, meanwhile, produced I'll Make Love to You and Water Runs Dry, two tracks that marked the charts thanks to their moving melodies and exceptional vocal harmonies. Dallas Austin, Tim & Bob (Tim Kelley & Bob Robinson), L.A. Reid, and The Characters (Troy Taylor & Charles Farrar) also contributed to the album's production, each bringing a unique sonic signature. The track Jezzebel, produced by The Characters, illustrates this diversity well: a blend of funky rhythms and modern arrangements that highlight the group's vocals.

Key tracks and memorable moments

Among the key tracks on II, "I'll Make Love to You" and "On Bended Knee" had a significant impact. The first, produced by Babyface, became one of the most iconic songs of 1990s R&B with its gentle melody and romantic lyrics. The second, signed by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, also reached number one on the charts thanks to its powerful rhythm and complex vocal harmonies. The track "Khalil (Interlude)", produced by Nathan Morris and Shawn Stockman from the group, is a poignant moment in the album. This short interlude pays homage to Roderick "Khalil" Rountree, the group's pianist who passed away in 1992. This personal contribution adds an emotional dimension to the work, showing that II is not just an album of music but also a testimony to a human story.

Notable Creative Choices and Omissions

The album benefited from an intense creative process: more than 20 songs were recorded, but only 13 were ultimately retained. This dispersion suggests some difficulty in selecting the tracks that would best represent the group's identity. However, this abundance of options allowed them to choose pieces that perfectly matched Boyz II Men's style and artistic vision. This lack of precision, though minor, raises a question about the coherence of the overall production project.

A Contemporary R&B Masterpiece

II remains a remarkable example of vocal excellence and production quality. It marked the history of R&B by winning the first Grammy Award for Best R&B Album, and it continues to be celebrated today by critics and fans alike. The album allowed Boyz II Men to flourish artistically while solidifying their place in popular music history. With tracks that defined a generation, II remains a contemporary R&B masterpiece, whose harmonies and arrangements continue to influence the musical scene.
