BROCKHAMPTON - TM
Released on November 18, 2022 via RCA Records and Question Everything labels, this short album clocking in at 37 minutes and 34 seconds features eleven tracks, opening with FMG and closing with GOODBYE. It marks the conclusion of a deal signed with RCA Records in 2018. Released on November 18, 2022, one day after The Family (2022), this album completes the six albums released under RCA since that year and immediately follows The Family, which was previously announced as their final studio project. The record was recorded from tracks begun during a two-week stay in Ojai, California, in 2021 but were never finished back then.
FMG: the opening track closing an RCA deal
Track one, FMG, immediately establishes the sonic legacy of a collective project completed in California. This opener functions as an identity card for this record, confirming the full return of Brockhampton's original roster after The Family. Unlike the previous album which featured only Kevin Abstract as a performer with productions by Bearface, TM sees the entire band returning: Abstract, Matt Champion, Dom McLennon, Jabari Manwa, Merlyn Wood, and Joba are back on stage. The production is here the result of massive collaboration where Jonah Abraham appears as a constant producer across almost all tracks, acting as the sonic backbone.
NEW SHOES and DUCT TAPE: abstract titles from the core
The following track, NEW SHOES, features Dutra, Jabari Manwarring, Jonah Abraham and Romil Hemnani. Following that is DUCT TAPE, featuring Baird, Dom McLennon, Dylan Neustadter, Jabari Manwarring, Romil Hemnani, The Kount and Wesley Allen. This roster of internal and external producers demonstrates an uncompromising willingness to experiment. Each producer is credited for their specific role in the project's creation rather than by implication or association.
KEEP IT SOUTHERN: bilingualism as a conceptual signature
The track KEEP IT SOUTHERN, produced by Grant Lapointe, Jonah Abraham, Kiko Merley and Romil Hemnani, embodies this collaborative approach where each member of the group or external producer contributes to the whole. Here are visible shifts in genre and some of the cleanest verses from the group in quite some time. Clash journalist James Mellen called TM a "classic Brockhampton record" that succeeded at closing out the project's run, featuring "immaculate production, genre shapeshifting, and some of the cleanest verses from the group in quite some time".
MAN ON THE MOON: narrative density at the heart of the album
The collective and varied production involving internal members (John Debold, Jonah Abraham, Kiko Merley, Romil Hemnani) and external producers is fully realized here.
GOODBYE: the definitive close to a discographic cycle
The title track ALWAYS SOMETHING, produced by Jabari Manwarring, sets the stage for the closing cut, GOODBYE. Produced by Jabari Manwarring, Jonah Abraham and Romil Hemnani, this final piece seals the end of a cycle that began in 2018 with an exact duration of 37 min 34 s. It marks the conclusion of Brockhampton's studio discography following Ginger (2019) and The Family (2022), thus completing the era initiated in 2017 with Saturation. Considered by Clash journalist James Mellen to be a "classic Brockhampton record" that successfully ended the group's project, this album stands out for its immaculate production, genre shifts, and some of the cleanest bars the group has delivered in some time.
TM follows directly in the wake of Ginger (2019) and The Family (2022), thereby concluding the cycle started back in 2017 with Saturation. This album rounds out the six releases signed to RCA Records since 2018. Although The Family was announced as the final opus, TM emerged unexpectedly via a promo image and is presented by the group as a "parting gift for fans." It consists of tracks started during a two-week session in Ojai, California, back in 2021 but never finished at that time. Released on November 18, 2022, through RCA and Question Everything, this album is Brockhampton's eighth and final studio work. It marks the conclusion of their deal with RCA Records signed in 2018.
