Burna Boy - Outside
More than just a follow-up to Redemption (2016), Outside stands as a manifesto of independence signed by Burna Boy. On January 26, 2018, the Nigerian artist checked his luggage under Atlantic Records while retaining the colors of his own universe: Spaceship Entertainment and Bad Habit. This third studio album, which comprises twelve tracks for a total duration of 41 minutes and 8 seconds, is defined by its very nature: a mixtape where the artist claims a heterogeneous blend of Afrobeats, dancehall, reggae, and road rap.
A Genesis Under Atlantic Records Label
The move to Atlantic marks an institutional turning point without sacrificing Burna Boy's personal artistic vision. Far from the uniformity imposed by majors, this project is hybrid in conception from the start. Production is entrusted to a varied team that includes Juls, Leriq, P2J, Jae 5, FRED, and Phantom. This diversity of producers allows for exploring several soundscapes without the album being artificially unified. The result is a coherence that relies less on the similarity of tracks than on fidelity to a properly singular sonic identity.
The Afroswing Rhythmic Foundation of More Life and Koni Baje
The album is built like an architecture where rhythm takes precedence over vocal improvisation. From the very first track, More Life, it becomes clear that Burna Boy isn't trying to impose a single style but rather to let multiple influences converse with one another. That's also why Koni Baje, on track 3, doesn't function merely as a rhythmic variation but serves as a cornerstone of the album. This track lays the foundation: there is no need for featured artists for the music to speak for itself. The richness of this project lies in its ability to sustain itself without external help.
The solo opening: Ye and Sekkle Down feat. J Hus
It is at the heart of this minimalist strategy that the paradox of Outside emerges. While most tracks are devoid of features, two songs perfectly illustrate how Burna Boy uses his voice as the only instrument needed. Ye, on track 6, functions as a transitional track between percussive rhythms and more narrative energy. Track 4, Sekkle Down feat. J Hus, introduces a touch of British afroswing that reinforces the project's international grounding. This collaboration isn't intended to add another voice but rather to demonstrate that Burna Boy can converse with different flows without losing his own identity. The presence of J Hus here is a deliberate choice: she brings a distinct sonic color while remaining in service of a global vision where the Nigerian artist remains the master of the game.
International Collaborations: Heaven's Gate feat. Lily Allen and Outside feat. Mabel
Later on track 12, Outside feat. Mabel, a soft pop voice tempers the more rhythmic tracks that preceded it. These collaborations are not superfluous additions but editorial choices designed to maintain tension between local sound and global openness. Each guest is used as a tool of contrast, never as an end in itself.
The Eponymous Title and Sonic Coherence Despite Varied Production
The eponymous track Outside, recorded at Pete Townshend's boat studio, closes the album with this same intention of balancing intimacy and openness. The varied production under the hands of the aforementioned producers thus compensates for the near-total absence of collaborations on most tracks to create a unique coherence. This is not an album suffering from its lack of guests but a record that uses this absence as strength: each track stands on its own, each production has its own color without threatening the integrity of the project overall.
Outside is primarily a statement of positioning: Burna Boy isn't trying to impose his style on others but rather create a space where he can evolve freely. The album stands out for its internal richness, whereas other projects rely on collaborations to fill their own gaps. It's an album where the heterogeneous production serves as mortar for a musical identity that doesn't depend on the presence or absence of a featured voice.
