Daniel Caesar - Case Study 01

Editorial note8,0/ 10
By Le Stagiaire·

"Case Study 01" is a bold experiment in vocal diversity, featuring Canadian artist Daniel Caesar navigating between classicism and innovation. Released on June 28, 2019 through Golden Child Recordings, this album attempts to move away from Freudian (2017) while retaining its vulnerable touch. Ten tracks totaling 43 minutes and 7 seconds; it presents an imperfect but talented man, who sometimes oscillates between consistency and expansive ambition.

Entropy: Chaos as a Starting Point

The opening track, ENTROPY, lays the foundation for uncertainty and emotional chaos. This deliberate choice suggests a desire to avoid a safe path, instead immersing the listener in a flow of unstable states from the very first track. The arrangement alternates these turbulent moments with calmer passages, creating a narrative dynamic that runs throughout the project. This opening announces an album where internal tension is at the core, before collaborations alter the sonic landscape.

Love Again feat. Brandy: An International Soul Credibility

The album firmly establishes its connection to soul music from the third track, LOVE AGAIN, which features Brandy's performance. This collaboration brings international R&B credibility and significantly strengthens the soulful vocal aspect of the song. The presence of this genre icon allows Daniel Caesar to position himself within a prestigious lineage while maintaining his own unique artistic identity. The balance between the lead vocals and the guest vocalist confirms that the artist has successfully integrated international stars without sacrificing their personal message. This track demonstrates the album's ability to transform a simple collaboration into a defining moment, connecting generations through the thread of soul music.

Frontal Lobe Muzik & Restore The Feeling: The experimental guest overload

On FRONTAL LOBE MUZIK, Pharrell Williams adds a pop/hip-hop experimental touch and a star's weight to Daniel Caesar's productions, introducing a different energy compared to the more intimate tracks on the album. The density of vocal contributions requires careful attention to avoid overshadowing the artist's own personality.

Superposition feat. John Mayer: The acoustic calm

Following these moments of intense collaboration, SUPERPOSITION brings a sense of balance with John Mayer's performance. John Mayer's vocals are integrated into the album's structure as a temporal and stylistic anchor, reminding us that experimentation should not erase the traditional roots of pop music. This transition towards a more raw and acoustic sound prepares the ground for a conclusion that returns to the artist's intimate sources.

Are You OK? : the closing act

The closing track is entrusted to ARE YOU OK?, a title that confirms that the density of collaborations never obscured the artist's vulnerability. By ending on this track, the album completes its cycle by returning to the essential: personal confession and the search for self-understanding. This introspective conclusion validates the hypothesis that Case Study 01 is, above all, a project of self-exposure, where the guests only complete a pre-existing sonic architecture created by Daniel Caesar. The album therefore ends not on a final flourish, but on an open question, inviting the listener to consider what is good for the singer, and by extension, for each of us.

Case Study 01 is a solid effort, despite its potential for inconsistency, demonstrating that Daniel Caesar remains a talented songwriter capable of extracting a lot of romance from his verses. However, the album also illustrates the difficulty for an artist considered a newcomer to wanting to diversify their sound too early in their career. While some moments seem to suggest that he is trying a little too hard to appeal to all possible aesthetics, the integrity of the message and the quality of the collaborations make it possible to consider this album as a necessary, albeit imperfect, step in the evolution of an artist who refuses to limit themselves solely to the gospel inherited from their father. Longlisted for the Polaris Music Prize 2020, this album remains an important marker in the trajectory of Daniel Caesar between two EPs and his next studio project.
