De La Soul - Cabin in the Sky

Cabin in the Sky is La Soul's ninth studio album, released on November 21, 2025, via Mass Appeal Records. It concludes the "Legend Has It" series and carries a particular weight: it is the group's first album since the death of Trugoy the Dove in 2023.

A productive patchwork between legends and underground figures

The production of this opus unfolds as a prestigious assembly where historical names from New York hip-hop stand alongside less media-covered figures. Pete Rock signs The Package and Different World, while DJ Premier handles Sunny Storms and The Silent Life Of A Truth. Supa Dave West ensures cohesion with Good Health, Day In The Sun (Gettin' wit U), Believe (In Him), and Cabin In The Sky. Nottz produces A Quick 16 for Mama and Jake One takes care of Patty Cake. Trugoy the Dove is credited on YUHDONTSTOP, Cruel Summers Bring FIRE LIFE!!, and Don't Push Me, confirming his central role in the album's sonic architecture.

The major collaborations: voices that reactivate the group without erasing it

The featured artists are chosen for their ability to reactivate the group's codes while adding a precise narrative function. Nas on Run It Back!! brings narrative depth and technical flow that elevate the track to the status of a classic. Common and Slick Rick on Yours offer a dual perspective: Common's contemplative and humanist voice contrasts with Slick Rick's unique storytelling style and complex rhymes. Q-Tip on Day In The Sun (Gettin' wit U), featuring Yummy Bingham, reactivates the golden era of New York hip-hop through his warm voice and laid-back flow. Black Thought on EN EFF showcases an impressive vocal technique and rapid flow that recall the tradition of conscious rap. Bilal on Palm Of His Hands adds a soulful and melodic touch that recalls the group's roots with his airy vocal style.

Secondary but essential voices: Yummy Bingham, Yukimi, and Gareth Donkin

The featuring strategy extends to lesser-known artists to diversify the album without diluting it. Yummy Bingham on Will Be brings a soft, introspective voice that contrasts with the group's typical flow. Yukimi (Carlsson) of Little Dragon on Cruel Summers Bring FIRE LIFE!! introduces a melodic and exotic touch to the record. Jay Pharoah and Gareth Donkin on Just How It Is (Sometimes) add a humorous element and a more detached flow, reminiscent of the original group's comedy. Gina Loring on Different World brings a different perspective and a distinct voice. STOUT, K. Butler & The Collective on Believe (In Him) contribute raw energy and a direct flow.

Verdict: an album where the warmth of the voices compensates for multi-handed production

Cabin in the Sky fits within the group's legacy while marking a necessary generational break. The death of Trugoy the Dove, co-founder and key producer, left a void that the album fills through vocal density rather than purely musical continuity. The featured producers—Pete Rock, DJ Premier, Supa Dave West—each bring their sonic signature without homogenizing the record: the variety of approaches (from Pete Rock's heavy production to Trugoy's more organic style) creates a coherent collage that respects the group's evolution. These features are not just label names but narrative choices that reactivate La Soul's founding themes (social consciousness, joy of living, reflection on passing time). The album thus succeeds in its aim: it is both an homage to the past and a current proposition.
