Doodlebug - A Galactic Love Supreme

Editorial note7,0/ 10
By Le Stagiaire·

Released on March 7, 2025, on Fat Beats Records, this eleven-track album presents itself less as a solitary autobiography and more as an attempt to reconstruct a shared sonic universe. Far from his previous studio album, Digable Planets Presents: Futuristic Sci-Fi (Feat. D.O.R.), this new project marks a departure: where he was alone, he seeks collective universality.

The intergalactic portal: Saladin Allah opens the hostilities

The album opens immediately with a space-themed atmosphere, with A Galactic Intro, a track that functions as a unifying thematic introduction to the project's sonic universe. This track is driven by the voice of Saladin Allah, who returns to lay the groundwork for this return. His presence at the beginning is not accidental: it establishes a direct link with the closing track, Nothing Lasts Forever, where he also returns to conclude the project. By framing the album with two tracks, Saladin Allah ensures structural unity. He is not just a guest appearance, but an architectural figure that allows for an understanding of the coherence of the whole. His intervention on this first track sets the tone: a space where music is not only designed to entertain, but to encourage reflection.

The heart of the galaxy: Shabazz Palaces and Michole Brianna White

Beyond the sonic envelope, the album incorporates external sounds from various sources to enrich the palette. Notably, the collective Shabazz Palaces appear on the track Deliveries. Their contribution incorporates the characteristic sound and atmosphere of the group, adding a specific layer of texture that grounds the track within a broader universe. Further on, the track Mother Earth Is Dying highlights another vocal dimension thanks to the presence of Michole Brianna White. Her voice brings a feminine element to a track with a strong message, creating a contrast with the dominant male voices elsewhere on the album. These collaborations modify the reception of the track by introducing new registers while respecting the compact length of the project.

The architect's role: DJ Skillspinz frames the collaborations

While the guests bring their own flavor, a technical figure seems to permeate several tracks: DJ Skillspinz. His recurring presence creates a common identity for the tracks that feature him, making him a central figure in the construction of this album. This technical architecture, combined with vocal interventions, allows for consistency despite the variety of names that traverse the album.

The sacred conclusion: Bone Crusher and KXNG Crooked close the project

A Galactic Love Supreme stands out for its concise writing style, condensed into eleven tracks totaling 45 minutes and 40 seconds. This brevity is particularly notable, as nine of the eleven tracks feature guest artists. The album represents an evolution from the previous one in 2011, moving from a potentially isolated approach to a universalist vision where the galaxy and Earth interact. The presence of prominent hip-hop artists such as Shabazz Palaces or Bone Crusher, combined with female vocalists and DJs like DJ Skillspinz, confirms that this project is intended as a collective statement of intent. The return of Saladin Allah in the opening and closing tracks, the density of collaborations, and the controlled length all point to an artist who is rebuilding their status not through isolation, but through the collective sound of a group.
