Graya - L'étoile noire

Editorial note7,5/ 10
By Le Stagiaire·

Corrompu sets the fire. From the very first second, the album refuses to be a mere collection of collaborations. It opens with pure gangsta tension, immediately establishing the project's codes: street life, luxury, and this ambition to prove its place at the top. The black star does not just exist in sonic space; it occupies territory.

Corrompu: the opening that sets the gangsta code

Track 1 functions as a raw statement of intent. It plants the setting before the first collaboration even arrives to disturb this balance. It is a solid foundation, the one upon which Graya builds his edifice of 18 tracks over 55 minutes. Between the opening and the closing, La Castellane 4, there is an entire journey to be traversed.

Truc de malade feat. Jul: validation by the top tier

Track 4 arrives like a slap from authority. The arrival of an artist of Jul's caliber on this track serves as immediate validation for the album, anchoring Graya in the French scene without needing to add another word. It is not a simple appearance; it is a mise en abîme: if Jul is there, it means the project has reached a level recognized by its peers. The track does more than dazzle; it confirms the commercial and artistic ambition of the album from the midpoint onward in its first half.

Dans la peau feat. Alonzo & Soprano: density and technique

Track 9 marks a technical turn. The duo Alonzo/Soprano offers lyrical and technical density that raises the bar for rhymes on this specific track. Where Corrompu laid down raw foundations, here complexity takes hold. Soprano and Alonzo are not merely decorative guests; they impose tight writing work that radically changes the listening tempo. The rhyme density on this specific track transforms the album's dynamic: you move from assertion to demonstration.

Monte Carlo feat. Naps: continuity of an artistic relationship

Track 10 extends a story already written before the release of this album. Graya was invited by Naps on "Zeillo" (Pochon bleu (2017)) and on "Callage" (On est fait pour ça (2019)), confirming an artistic relationship established long before this meeting. Monte Carlo is therefore not a chance collaboration, but the logical continuation of a shared journey. Track 10 crystallizes this bond, transforming the guest into an accomplice who already knows Graya's codes.

A la K-Sté feat. UZI: dark and melancholic contrast

Track 6 introduces a different color. Uzi's presence adds a darker, more melancholic touch, contrasting with the album's more aggressive tracks. Where Corrompu roared down the street, A la K-Sté whispers tales of shadow. Uzi changes the register: he doesn't come to add sonic volume but to introduce an intimate nuance, almost ominous. This contrast is essential to the album's overall construction, which refuses to remain fixed within a single emotional register.

Track 16 cracks with a faster rhythm and raw energy. Here, the double collaboration isn't just an accumulation of names; it creates additional tension, two voices confronting and complementing each other on a beat that forgives no softness. DA Uzi and GLK each bring their own sonic signature, transforming this track into a true vocal duel where aggressive flow dominates the entire structure. This piece functions as an intense parenthesis within the album, reminding us that Graya knows how to orchestrate sonic confrontations without ever sacrificing her own artistic presence.

Tracks 11 and 12 close out the upper half of the album with a diversity of approaches. THABITI on Trafic and Kofs on Les vrais bring their respective colors, completing the sonic mosaic without seeking to impose a single style. These tracks show that the album isn't a monolithic project: it knows how to welcome different voices without making them fight.

Track 18 seals the album with a territorial note. If Corrompu opens to the street, La Castellane 4 returns to what truly matters for Graya: his neighborhood, its codes, his identity. It is a constant reminder that the entire album is built around a precise geographic and social anchor.

Track 17, Faits divers, acts as a true breaking point in the narrative structure of the record. Placed just before La Castellane 4, this track functions as a brutal transition that cuts sharply with the energy of previous collaborations to prepare the ground for the territorial close-up. Its strategic positioning between the features and the end of the album gives it a structural role: it is not merely an interlude, but a genuine thematic articulation that allows the record to shift from "collaborative" mode to "solo" mode.

L'Étoile Noire follows in the footsteps of an already established career, notably featuring collaborations with Naps on "Zeillo" (Pochon bleu, 2017) and "Callage" (On est fait pour ça, 2019). The album positions itself as the culmination of an artistic journey that began well before its official release, confirming that Graya is not a sudden revelation but an artist whose trajectory has been built progressively. Its October 15, 2021 release on labels 13ème Art Music and AllPoints marks a turning point in this evolution, directly paving the way for Réincarnation (2022). L'Étoile Noire is a studio album of 18 tracks with a total runtime of 55 minutes. Seven of the tracks feature collaborations, giving the record a fragmented yet rich texture. The tracklist offers significant listening density, with each collaboration serving as a distinct piece within the overall architecture. However, the high number of features may raise questions about artistic integrity in the face of a commercial approach. The album positions itself as a hybrid object: it is both a personal project and a platform for other voices. Between Corrompu and La Castellane 4, Graya has managed to build something coherent despite the multiplicity of contributors. It is an album that functions through strategic accumulation rather than unified vision, but precisely this tension gives L'Étoile Noire its particularity.
