ISK - Vérité

Editorial note9,5/ 10
By Le Stagiaire·

Tchernobyl. This opening track does more than introduce the album; it immediately sets a heavy tone, establishing a temporal and political reference that frames the entire project. On this studio album released on May 27, 2021, via Bendo 11 Records, ISK uses this first track as an unshakable starting point for a journey of twenty-four tracks, which will be concluded by Vérité 4. It is an editorially bold choice: framing the narrative with evocative titles while the heart of the album remains largely dominated by solo compositions.

A political and philosophical framework for ISK's album Vérité

The structure of Vérité does not seek to disperse attention but rather to build a linear narrative where each track serves a precise function within this initiatory journey. The album opens with Track 1, "Tchernobyl," a song that imposes a particular gravity from the first seconds before leading toward the final track of the album, "Vérité 4." This temporal symmetry frames a dense project where the total duration of 1 h 22 min is not merely an accumulation but an intentional progression. The political opening of "Tchernobyl" serves as the foundation for ISK's overall artistic approach, while "Vérité 4" offers a philosophical conclusion that seems to answer the questions raised at the beginning of the record. This architrave structure gives the project rare coherence, transforming a simple catalog of songs into a complete manifesto whose balance between its different facets is carefully calculated to endure in the listener's memory.

A density affirmed by ISK's solo heart

Beyond occasional collaborations, Vérité asserts through its very composition that ISK's voice must remain the central pillar of this sonic experience. Of the twenty-four tracks offered, eighteen are solo-signed, creating a dense texture that prioritizes artistic integrity over the tendency to overload albums. This predominance of personal compositions allows ISK to explore every nuance of his universe without being diluted by too frequent interventions. The production supports this will for sobriety, making room for the compositions that make up the bulk of the journey, where each verse is weighed and each sentence constructed with surgical precision. It is in this solo space that the true strength of the album resides, far from the collaborative trend effects that often invade contemporary albums to scatter across tracks without a real connection to the overall message.

A strategic economy of collaborations and featuring

Only six tracks feature a guest appearance, which transforms each collaboration into a strategic and necessarily noticeable intervention for the listener. DA Uzi appears on two distinct tracks of the tracklist: he first shows up on "Chez nous" (track 3), adding an extra voice to the song with specific energy, then returns later in the album on "Jamais on doute" (track 14) for a second collaboration that enriches the sonic ecosystem of the record. Niro also contributes to track 5, titled "Plus le temps," where his presence is credited and brings marked vocal contrast to ISK's solo composition. Alonzo joins the artist on "Quitter l'école" (track 8), while Sofiane takes a place on "Cités de France" (track 12), lending his voice to the track with authority that shifts the register of the song. Every collaboration is therefore a calculated choice, respecting ISK's solo trajectory while introducing varied colors without ever diluting the central identity of the album.

Managing the final hydra and bonus tracks for Vérité 4

The end of the album deserves special attention because it blends several elements that extend the total duration beyond the core. The track "Vérité" appears at position 21, immediately followed by three numbered sequels: "Vérité 2", "Vérité 3", and finally "Vérité 4" at position 24. This final structure creates an impression of potential redundancy that could be akin to a hard-to-conquer hydra if it were not framed by the opening track "Tchernobyl". Furthermore, bonus tracks like "Où je suis" and "Fazer" are included on the official album, stretching the runtime without necessarily enriching the central message proportionally. Track 19, "Fazer", even includes a collaboration with YL, although this presence requires nuance as it will later be confirmed as a subsequent intervention on the album Hannibal (2025). The inclusion of these bonus tracks raises the question of the project's actual density: do these additions add value or simply sonic volume?

Intermediate legacy between two major ISK albums

Vérité positions itself clearly as an essential link in ISK's discographic history, fitting perfectly between Le mal est fait (2020) and Racines (2022). It thus paves the way for Racines by maintaining a balance between lyrical density and occasional collaborations. Vérité is neither a brutal rupture nor a simple repetition of what was done before; it constitutes a phase of maturation where the artist refines his style without abandoning his historical roots. Between the previous album studio and the one that will follow, Vérité offers a unique perspective on the trajectory of an artist who knows where he is going while leaving room for the explorations necessary to his artistic growth.
