J9ueve - Arc-en-ciel

By Le Stagiaire·

On June 11, 2021, J9ueve released Arc-en-ciel, his first album. It marked a turning point in his career by blending international influences with a local vision of rap. At the time, French hip-hop was evolving, with more connections to other countries without losing its roots. The single Distanciel, which appeared on the compilation Tous Mes États 6 in collaboration with La Fève, brought attention to J9ueve. This short project paved the way for a more ambitious album where transnational collaborations became a foundation for exploring new styles.

Zaytoven, the key producer

Arc-en-ciel is produced by Zaytoven, an American producer who worked on almost every track. His style, featuring melodic and modern beats, gives the album a different texture than classic French rap. Even though no other producers are mentioned, Zaytoven's dominant presence shows he played an important role in creating its sound. This collaboration between J9ueve and Zaytoven goes beyond simple coincidence. It shows that the rapper wanted to explore sounds close to international hip-hop but rooted locally. Thanks to his production, Zaytoven added a technical dimension that allowed J9ueve to distance himself from traditional codes.

Stay at Home: a mix of styles

Among the standout tracks, Stay at Home stands out for its features by Future and Zaytoven. Future's feature adds an international touch with his fluid flow and lyrics that oscillate between lyricism and satire. Zaytoven's production gives the track a refined style, where samples and beats intertwine to create an atmosphere that is both modern and nostalgic. This track embodies well the balance J9ueve seeks: not just an imitation of American rap, but a fusion that incorporates local elements. Future's voice integrates naturally into the album's sound, as if he had always been part of this project.

Collaborations to Enrich the Album

The features on Arc-en-ciel are there not just for prestige. They serve to create synergy between styles. On Gift Shop, the presence of Gunna and Zaytoven brings another dimension, with a faster flow and beats that fit into contemporary trap. These collaborations aren't meant to be trendy; they enrich J9ueve's sonic universe. Zaytoven, present on several tracks, acts as a connecting thread. His role goes beyond the technical: he contributes to stylistic coherence that ties the tracks together. Even on tracks where he doesn't appear as a feature, his influence is perceptible in the choice of samples and general arrangement.

J9ueve Between Two Worlds

Arc-en-ciel thus embodies a desire for fusion. J9ueve isn't trying to reinvent himself; he's opening up to other influences to evolve without losing his identity. The album is the reflection of an artist in transition: he is no longer just a Parisian rapper, but an actor on the international hip-hop scene. This evolution can be felt in the musical choices, collaborations, and even the lyricism itself. J9ueve seems to have found a path that allows him to explore varied sounds while remaining anchored in emerging French rap. Arc-en-ciel isn't a record without flaws, but it embodies a key step in his career: the one where the artist begins to position himself as a bridge between two worlds, by inscribing himself within a scene that transcends borders.
