Kalash Criminel - R.A.S

Editorial note7,5/ 10
By Le Stagiaire·

On October 28, 2016, a dark silhouette emerged from the shadows of French rap. R.A.S., this isn't just a collection of tracks; it's the first cry of a man deciding to shed the collective shadow and assert himself alone. The mixtape hit shelves under the banner of 10/12 Records, Def Jam France, and Universal, carrying in its very title the message that governs it: R.A.S. (Nothing to Report). It's a manifesto where every track is proof of independence.

A fragmented sonic architecture between Ketama Musik, Anibal, and a dozen other producers

Far from the uniformity often sought in studio projects, R.A.S. is built on a heterogeneous production foundation. It's a mosaic where each track bears the signature of a different hand: Ketama Musik lays down the groundwork for Famas, Anibal signs off on three tracks (Tu sais où nous trouver, Sauvagerie 2 and Shabba), Zay 58 animates Makila, Double X and Twang collaborate on Sale sonorité, Ray Da Prince handles Carré vip, Jay Guapo works on 10 12 14 bureau, and DJ Ritmin and Guilty sign together on Guedro. This fragmentation isn't accidental: it reflects a desire to avoid sonic monotony. The Kalash Criminel sound emerges here as a sum of varied textures, where the rapper's flow adapts to moods that shift with every side of the album.

The three structuring collaborations: Kaaris on Arrêt du cœur, Douma on Makila, Hall 14 on Shabba

Only three tracks feature a credited guest, but each plays a strategic role in building Kalash Criminel's solo image. On Arrêt du cœur, Kaaris reaffirms the fraternal bond between the two artists; this track quickly became a visual phenomenon with its 10 million-view music video. Finally, on Shabba, Hall 14 returns strong, reminding listeners that while Kalash hasn't completely erased his past, he has integrated it into his new trajectory. These collaborations are not merely marketing additions: they serve to anchor Kalash Criminel within a network of respected peers while asserting that he remains the master of his project.

Arrêt du cœur and Sale Sonorité: the singles launching the mixtape on October 28, 2016

Two tracks propel R.A.S. into immediate relevance. The mixtape is already riding on two tracks that have proven themselves before the official release of the album.

Verdict: ten tracks to cement the break and establish Kalash Criminel as an independent artist

R.A.S. concludes with a clear note: it is indeed a first solo step, but not an abandonment of its roots. Of the ten tracks on the album, three include credited features; the rest rely solely on Kalash Criminel's writing and vocals. The mixtape officializes his break from Hall 14 without denying his heritage. R.A.S. is more than just an album: it is a sonic identity card for Kalash Criminel, as he chose it himself.
