Kenny Segal - Kenstrumentals Vol. 5: Winter Tours

Eighteen days after the cassette release, the album Kenstrumentals Vol. 5: Winter Tours is released on Preference Records on April 18, 2025. This 43-minute and 56-second long piece prioritizes the density of a sonic exploration, where winter in North America becomes the main character, transforming each step into an instrumental scene that blends Jazz Rap and instrumental Hip Hop.

Portrait of an Winter Architect: Kenny Segal between Team Supreme and instrumental hibernation

Kenny Segal reaffirms his status as a producer and DJ based in Los Angeles, a central figure in the Team Supreme collective. Following Genuine Dexterity (2024), this fifth album in the Kenstrumentals series marks a phase of creative hibernation, where the artist takes on the artistic responsibility alone. The production is purely instrumental, signed by Kenny Segal, who also handles the mixing and graphic design. This solo approach contrasts with his previous major projects such as Hiding Places (2019) or Maps (2023), where he collaborated with Billy Woods, as here, the absence of main vocals strengthens the solo universe of the Kenstrumentals series.

43 minutes of urban cold: the direct continuation of 'Winter Tours', framed by 'Cold Ass Intro'

The album opens with Cold Ass Intro, a track that captures the winter atmosphere before moving on to evocative titles that evoke a journey through the city. The album concludes with The Way It Is - VIP Dub, which closes this chapter of the instrumental saga. Kenny Segal describes this opus as a direct continuation of his tours across North America during the previous winter. This structure, framed by an introduction and conclusion in the dub style, gives the album a strong narrative coherence, where each track contributes to the evocation of images of intense urban cold.

Following in the footsteps of Milo and Billy Woods: the fifth installment in a series that focuses on instrumental music, rather than featuring vocals

While Ken Can Cook (2008) and The Kleenrz (2012) were significant milestones in his career, the Kenstrumentals Vol. 5: Winter Tours (2025) series confirms his legacy by foregoing guest appearances and instead focusing on pure instrumental music.

From 'Genuine Dexterity' to 'HUMAN ERROR CLUB': The album that shifted Kenny Segal's trajectory

This unconventional trajectory, starting with drum and bass and evolving into Californian jazz-rap, results in an album that prioritizes sound design over vocals. The album is released on Preference Records, further solidifying Kenny Segal's position as a producer and DJ based in Los Angeles, while continuing the series initiated by Ken Can Cook (2008) and continued by compilations like Kenstrumentalz Vol. 1: Look What I Found Under Kenny's Couch (2013), Kenstrumentals, Vol. 2: Summer Rarities (2016), and Kenstrumentals Vol. 4: a lot on my plate (2020). The artist offers the album for free listening via the Bandcamp app, with unlimited streaming, as well as high-quality MP3 and FLAC downloads. The availability in 24-bit/48kHz format demonstrates a particular attention to sound quality, reflecting Kenny Segal's status as "one of the best hip-hop producers in the city," as described in Mixmag (2018). This fifth installment of the Kenstrumentals series validates the musical legacy of an artist whose career has been marked by significant collaborations, such as Hiding Places (2019) and Maps (2023) with Billy Woods, and The Night Green Side of It (2025) with R.A.P. Ferreira, but who here chooses to focus on independent exploration during the winter season. This album prioritizes a minimalist and independent approach, cutting out any vocal elements to focus on the essence of instrumental production. Kenny Segal's studio album, released on April 18, 2025, on Preference Records, offers a precise portrait of a producer in a state of winter exploration. The album's total length of 43 minutes and 56 seconds reflects this deliberate economy, where each track is carefully considered. Kenstrumentals Vol. 5: Winter Tours positions itself as a bridge between Kenny Segal's active periods in collaborative studio work and his instrumental series, validating his role in both Jazz Rap and instrumental Hip Hop.
