Khali - IL ME RESSEMBLE PAS NON PLUS

Editorial note8,0/ 10
By Le Stagiaire·

Far from the mainstream Francophone rap codes, IL ME RESSEMBLE PAS NON PLUS is a radical statement of intent. Following the notable success of LAÏLA in 2019, Khali returns with an album that unflinchingly explores the question of identity and the art of being oneself.

A sonic architecture built by multiple hands

The main strength of the project lies in its producer diversity. Far from a monolithic sound, each track is the fruit of a specific collaboration that imparts a unique color to the whole. Frederick N'Landu handles mixing on the majority of tracks, ensuring technical consistency while allowing different approaches to breathe. Johnny Ola steps in on EN VRAI, G LE SEUL and UMBRELLA, adding his distinct touch to these songs. Demna's presence on 808 and ON T'A PROMIS QUOI ? introduces an experimental dimension that contrasts with the more classic productions. Bloody signs off on JAMAIS COMME ILS VONT and BLOODY PLM, while Kosei is involved in several tracks like JAMAIS COMME ILS VONT, LA FLÈCHE, ON T'A PROMIS QUOI ? and G LE SEUL. Guapo du soleil contributes to LA FLÈCHE, ON T'A PROMIS QUOI ?, NO PSY, PEPELE and UMBRELLA, creating a thread throughout the album. This mosaic of producers allows Khali to explore different registers without losing his artistic identity. Each collaboration is chosen to serve a precise intention rather than to fill space.

The assertion of an uncompromising singularity

At the heart of the project, the track JE M'EN MOQUE EFFECTIVEMENT functions as a manifesto. Produced by Khali himself with help from Unfazzed and mixed by Frederick N'Landu, this song embodies the artist's stance toward external expectations. The choice of a collaborative producer for this flagship track underscores a desire for total control over the message delivered. JAMAIS COMME ILS VONT, produced by Bloody, Khali, Kosei, and Sempai Katchy with mixing by Frederick N'Landu, reinforces that idea of rejecting conformity. The simultaneous presence of multiple producers on this track suggests a collective construction around a shared vision: that of an artist who does not adapt to the standards imposed by the industry.

Collaborations that open without diluting

The album features several interludes and tracks that serve as bridges between the different facets of the project. KOLAF INTERLUDE and PAS DE ZGA INTERLUDE function as breathing spaces, allowing the artist to step back from the main subject matter while maintaining overall coherence. PEPELE, produced by Guapo du soleil, Nostal, and Uraken with mixing by Frederick N'Landu, represents a more intimate approach that contrasts with the more assertive tracks. BLOODY PLM, signed by Bloody and Kookup, offers a different perspective within the album itself. ENTRE PALMER ET PARIS ZOO, produced by Wladimir Pariente and mixed by Nlandu Mawungu, introduces a geographical dimension that enriches the project's sonic palette without diluting its essence.

A reception that validates an original approach

Critics have praised IL ME RESSEMBLE PAS NON PLUS for its sincerity and thematic depth. Media outlets like Lavague Parallele have highlighted the inventiveness of this album within alternative French-language rap, considering it a landmark work of this period. The project is seen as the validation of an artistic approach that refuses compromise while fitting into a broader movement where alternative rap is gaining traction.

Verdict: an album that defines its own rules

IL ME RESSEMBLE PAS NON PLUS stands out for its ability to maintain artistic coherence despite the diversity of its productions. Khali does not seek sonic homogeneity but rather a unity of intent, with each track serving to explore a different facet of his identity. This project confirms that Francophone alternative rap can carry works as personal as they are universal, where production becomes an instrument of expression rather than mere backdrop. Here, Khali finds the words to say who he is, without ever trying to sound like anyone else.
