Lecrae - Get Well Soon!

Editorial note8,0/ 10
By Le Stagiaire·

After concluding the Church Clothes mixtape series with volume 4 in 2022, Lecrae is back on stage without delay. This album isn't presented as a chronological sequel, but rather as a stylistic statement: it features West Coast Hip Hop influences, a concise runtime of 17 minutes and 15 seconds for just seven tracks, and its release was preceded by a community unveiling event that included DJ Hed. The approach is deliberately compact, a departure from the excesses of overproduction in the music industry. From the very first track, the sonic texture changes dramatically compared to the usual expectations of Christian rap.

Energetic production and authentic lyrics from track 1

The presence of this producer on the opening track suggests a carefully crafted sound, perhaps raw or retro, which serves as an immediate hook for the listener. The following track, On Time, relies solely on robust production to maintain the intensity between the prominent collaborations. The album's structure is defined by this balance between moments of collaborative brilliance and sections where the project relies exclusively on the dynamic between Lecrae and Minnick.

The iconic E-40 anchors the project in the West Coast scene.

The geographical connection is further strengthened by the legendary presence of E-40 on the third track, The Method. This iconic figure of California rap immediately validates the project as an immersion into local culture, transforming the album into a vehicle for this specific sound. The third track serves as a central landmark, proving that the project is not just a detour but a serious exploration of a different sonic universe.

The Community Aspect: The GANG Collective on Track 5

The album then incorporates a clear community dimension on the fifth track, GANG, where three artists are credited simultaneously: YeloHill, Tommy Zuko, and CJ Emulous. This collective configuration reinforces the collaborative aspect highlighted during the immersive listening sessions in Los Angeles and Atlanta. The contribution of this trio on the same tracklist underscores the intention of making the community an integral part of the creative process. The track doesn't just add names for prestige; it adds vocal density that contrasts with the previous tracks. This community-focused approach aligns with the idea that the project is built around a broader scene, not just a solo artist.

Solitude and Robustness of the Productions on Tracks Without Featured Artists

Between these moments of collaboration, the album presents a technical challenge for the solo tracks. Tracks Graced Up (track 4) and Ice Out My Life (track 6), which are interspersed between the collaborations, must maintain the listener's attention without external "guiding" figures. The total duration of 17 minutes and 15 seconds for seven tracks means that every minute counts, and the sound quality must be consistent without the support of an external "flow." Track 4, located between the textured intro and the appearance of E-40, requires the production to carry the entire weight of the narrative. The track Ice Out My Life, near the end, must also ensure the transition to the closing track without relying on a guest appearance.

Spiritual Closure: The Contrast Between Groove and Message

The final track, Heaven Sent, concludes the album by offering a distinct contrast between groove and message.
