Naps - MEC DE CITÉ SIMPLE

Editorial note8,5/ 10
By Le Stagiaire·

The album presents itself as a summer manifesto and dance declaration, an act of independence that rejects commercial brevity in favor of narrative exhaustiveness.

Solo Opening: ÇA ARRIVE FORT sets the pact with pain

The album opens on track 1, titled "ÇA ARRIVE FORT", which immediately establishes a narrative tension between introspection and sonic explosion. This opening track functions as a prism through which the entirety of the project will be observed: it announces a double-sided record where personal introspection occasionally collides with the violence of urban imagery. This solo opening, without any featured credits on the album, serves as the foundation for what follows, as if Naps were first taking his distance before calling upon others. Track 1 is a founding act that defines the tone of the project: a Marseille rapper who dares to be alone in his own sonic space before sharing it with his peers.

Collaborative Heart: Gazo, Jul and Kalif Hardcore transform the album into generational action

At the heart of the project, six tracks feature credited features, transforming the album into a genuine generational act of resistance. The centerpiece, Ice feat. Gazo, marks a direct continuity with En temps réel (2023), where Naps had already invited the rapper on "C'est carré le s." This recurrence is not merely habit but an affirmation of a shared language: Gazo brings the same raw energy as on his previous exchange with Naps without ever veering into imitation. "À quoi tu joues feat. Jul," for its part, marks another chapter in this long relationship: after "Sans limites" (Les mains faites pour l'or, 2021), "Avengers" (Best Life, 2021) and "Guytoune" (Loin du monde, 2020), Jul returns here for an exchange that goes beyond the simple chorus. Kalif Hardcore, meanwhile, multiplies his appearances: he is credited on Full Access (track 7) as well as Le plus stylé (track 15). His presence is not a dispersion but a densification of the sonic texture. On CDG (track 9), Kalif Hardcore shares the track with Heuss L'enfoiré, whose appearance dates back to "Rappelle-toi" (On est fait pour ça, 2019). These collaborations are not decorative inserts; they anchor Naps within a network of peers who have shaped the French rap scene in recent years.

The political closure: SUITE PRESIDENTIELLE transforms the project into a manifesto

Track 20, titled "PRESIDENTIAL SUITE," closes the album on a note of challenge. This closing track is not merely a sonic epilogue; it transforms the entire record into an implicit political manifesto. Between the Fête de la Musique and this final track, Naps proposes a journey from the intimate to the collective, from personal to political. The very structure of the record, running exactly 57 minutes, is designed as a logical sequence: each featuring reinforces the initial proposition set by ÇA ARRIVE FORT, each song adds to the previous one to build a coherent whole.

Review of a tenth studio album

Mec de cité simple confirms Naps as an indispensable author in French rap. Six credited features across twenty songs suffice to deepen the message without weighing down the reading experience. Released on June 21, 2024—the day of the Fête de la Musique—it presents itself as a summer and dance album, but its depth far exceeds this commercial label. Between ÇA ARRIVE FORT and PRESIDENTIAL SUITE, the record delivers what it promises: a complete, coherent work, resolutely on the side of those who refuse ready-made formulas.
