PLK - Ténébreux

Editorial note6,5/ 10
By Le Stagiaire·

Released on September 8, 2017 under the banner of Panenka Music, Ténébreux presents itself as a singular object. It is not a classic studio album, but rather a solo mixtape that marks a specific step in PLK's trajectory—Mathieu Pruski, born April 15, 1997, in the 14th arrondissement of Paris and member of the group Panama Bende. This record consolidates the image of an artist whose career had already been structured around two previous EPs: Peur de me tromper (2015) and Dedans (2016). The mixtape bears witness to a marked duality: a dark life, sometimes forced into illegal activities to pursue his musical career, expressed through raw lyrics, set against a production with melodic accents. It is this tension between the unfiltered reality of daily life and the soft sonic universe that constitutes the heart of the listening experience.

End of Month and Casino: the pilot tracks of a raw writing

The album opens with a track titled Amigo, before the mixtape gives itself its name with the song Ténébreux. It is there that the duality becomes immediately perceptible: a melody floating above lyrics that tell stories of difficult situations. The song Fin de mois perfectly illustrates this approach, where the writing remains honest about financial and social struggles without trying to embellish daily life. Further down in the tracklist, the track Casino fits into this same narrative register. It is not an album seeking to please through easy melodies or catchy hooks; rather, it is a confession where the artist exposes his contradictions and life choices. The production, although described as melodic in available sources, serves here as a sonic counterweight to the weight of the words. It does not seek to mask the substance of the text, but to create a space for reflection where the contrast between soft sound and harsh reality becomes the central element of the listening experience.

Not tonight with Krisy: the mixtape's only feature

Out of the eleven tracks on the album, Ténébreux features only one credited guest: Krisy on the track "Pas ce soir." This kind of feature is rare in a project that remains essentially solo. This collaboration doesn't fit into a strategy of massive co-starring or stylistic diversification; it serves as a brief anchor within an album that prioritizes personal introspection. Krisy's voice adds texture to this song, but without fundamentally altering the overall artistic direction of the record. It's a subtle presence, almost timid, reminding us that Ténébreux remains above all else a solitary writing project.

Ténébreux did not receive the same attention as later studio albums like Polak, released in October 2018, which saw PLK collaborate with artists such as SCH or Nekfeu. Here, the artist is still building himself, far from these major collaborations and within a more intimate universe. The mixtape helped bring PLK to audiences beyond his group Panama Bende, giving him a platform to express his personal vision of French rap. It does not seek to set records or conquer the charts; rather, it aims to establish an image of honesty and sincerity. In a musical landscape where production often dominates, Ténébreux reminds us that lyrics can remain central to the message, even when carried by melodies. This is an album that does not try to shine through its sound effects or guest appearances, but through its ability to tell a personal story without filter.
