T.I. - King

Editorial note9,5/ 10
By Le Stagiaire·

King is far more than an album: it's a sonic fracture that has redefined the codes of American rap, produced by a diversity of approaches and talents. This opus breaks away from limited soundscapes by integrating legends like Pharrell Williams and Common.

A sonic architecture where Just Blaze, Mannie Fresh, DJ Toomp, and The Neptunes forge "Rap Polyvalent"

Recording the album took a year and a half to complete, finishing in late 2005. Production is marked by a great diversity of approaches and talents, with notable contributions from Just Blaze on King Back and I'm Talkin' to You, Mannie Fresh on Front Back, DJ Toomp on What You Know and Bankhead, The Neptunes on Goodlife, and Swizz Beatz on Get It. Mixing is handled by a variety of engineers (James And Ariel, Leslie Brathwaite, John Frye, Manny Marroquin, etc.), reflecting the richness of the recording sessions. T.I. proves with impeccable consistency that he can be impressive on any type of instrumentation.

The standout tracks: King Back, I'm Talkin' to You and Goodlife as pillars of the album's lyrical universe

King Back kicks off the album with raw energy produced by Just Blaze. I'm Talkin’ to You follows immediately, also signed by Just Blaze, showcasing the rapper's ability to navigate heavy beats. Further into the record, Goodlife stands out as a key moment on the project, produced by The Neptunes. This track pairs Common and Pharrell Williams, highlighting the universal ambitions of the album and expanding the audience beyond pure rap.

The collaborative dimension: UGK's documented presence on Front Back enriches the vocal landscape with stars like Pharrell Williams and Common

The participation of numerous featured artists such as Pharrell Williams, Common, and Young Jeezy is central to the sonic architecture of King. On Front Back, UGK strengthens ties with the Atlanta scene as an emblematic group of Southern rap. Live in the Sky features a pop/R&B star, expanding the audience beyond pure rap thanks to Jamie Foxx. I'm Straight consolidates the network of Grand Hustle Records artists with a collaboration between B.G. and Young Jeezy. Undertaker extends the album's geopolitical reach by involving Young Buck and Young Dro. Finally, Goodlife pairs Common, a respected rapper, and Pharrell Williams, a major producer and artist, for a sound that transcends regional boundaries.

Verdict: an artistic success that marked American rap history in 2006

King marks T.I.'s assertion as a major figure in rap with ambitions extending beyond just the South of the United States. The album was praised for T.I.'s consistency across different types of instrumentation, confirming his status as a leading figure in the genre.
