Trey Songz - Ready

Released on August 31, 2009 on Atlantic, Ready is the culmination of a period of transformation. This studio album features 17 tracks, totaling 58 minutes and 14 seconds, following Trey Day (2007) and preceding the MTV Unplugged project (live, 2010). The album opens with the first track, Panty Droppa - Intro, which immediately establishes the intimate atmosphere of the album. Tremaine Aldon Neverson's third studio album aims for a sophisticated crossover radio sound and a classic R&B ambition from the outset. The stated goal is to create a "classic body of work" rather than a simple compilation, working each bridge and refrain with meticulous craftsmanship.

Drake and Trey Songz: Aiming for an Ambitious Radio Crossover

The mature sound on the opening tracks reflects the "très adult, very easygoing and very sexy" style championed by the artist. This crossover ambition is realized through the inclusion of major rappers on the tracklist. Drake appears on two tracks: "I Invented Sex" (track 3) and "Successful" (track 12).

Say Aah feat. Fabolous: Number One on the Billboard Hot 100

While the collaboration with Drake serves the radio strategy, it's the track "Say Aah" (track 7) that truly propels the album to success. Featuring Fabolous, this song reaches the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100, confirming the author's belief that it would become a "monster club record" hit. Fabolous's contribution to the song provides a strong rap texture that contrasts with the more mellow ballads, while still remaining within the desired "very sexy" style. The impact is so significant that this album becomes the first certified Gold album by the artist, a crucial milestone in his career.

LOL:-) feat. Gucci Mane & Soulja Boy Tell 'Em: A drastic stylistic shift

This track features contributions from Gucci Mane and Soulja Boy Tell 'Em, offering a stark departure from Trey Songz's usual R&B sound. This collaboration marks a shift towards Southern rap and more energetic sounds, breaking the "easygoing" consistency promised throughout the album. The presence of Gucci Mane also recalls a previous collaboration, where the artist had already been featured by the Georgian rapper on the track "Drink It Straight" from the album Back to the Traphouse (2007). Soulja Boy Tell 'Em completes this unusual combination, adding a touch of eccentricity to the project. This clash of styles illustrates the diverse sound of Ready, although some critics have pointed out the potential inconsistency that can result.

Ready: Balancing Classic Ambition and Commercial Success

An analysis of the album reveals a constant tension between the ambition of a "classic body of work" and the reality of a production that has sometimes been criticized for its lack of coherence. The album received generally positive reviews, with comparisons to the work of R. Kelly, but also reservations about this internal inconsistency, suggesting a longevity that initial critics had not fully anticipated. This legacy is further solidified by the fact that the album is not just a collection of radio hits, but a definitive work for the artist, who himself stated that these tracks were "embody the person I am". The subsequent project, MTV Unplugged (live, 2010), would demonstrate that this maturity acquired on Ready was indeed real.
